This is a conversation between SLBA Board member, Ashley Barbeau and Diana Engman, owner of Hacks.
1. What made you choose your new location? Being a landmark business in downtown Lansing since 1921, I knew staying close by would be essential to carrying on the our loyal customers used to coming to the downtown location. Hacks needed a large enough space that could accommodate our new business endeavors. It just happened this great location became available as I started my search. REO Town is just perfect to carry the business forward. It is in South Lansing but still close enough to downtown. The easy on and off the 496 expressway is another great bonus and convenience.
2. Do you have any special memories of the south side of Lansing that made an impact on you or your business? I was co-owner of A Complete Rental for 22 years on Mt. Hope Ave. many years at 1020 W. Mt Hope. I bought the 236 W. Mt. Hope Ave property from the Lansing Area Safety Council. It was 4 empty lots that I developed. It took a lot of perseverance at city council but was able to re-zone the property after 6 months. I was the General Contractor on the project and learned a lot about building and developed a strong interest in the trades.
3. What are some services or products that you offer that SLBA might not know about? We offer all types of doors (Garage, metal frame service doors, aluminium store front fiber glass and many other types), all types of door hardware, security systems surveillance and of course keys. We offer automotive keys including the newest technology type auto keys for much less than the dealers can offer.
4. Any specials or events coming up that you would like to share? I will soon offer monitored systems to compete with ADT and Guardian Alarm. They don't have true offices here to service our residents.
